"Threadbare Heart: The Tale of Annabelle Stitch"

(Inspired by the 1918 public domain classic: Raggedy Ann Stories by Johnny Gruelle – but moodier, quirkier, and stitched with sass.)

Goldi was already lounging dramatically on a velvet chaise when Red strutted in with a bag of flaming hot scrolls and no patience.

Tink rolled her eyes. “It’s too early for unfiltered opinions, Red.”

“I brought cinnamon quills and attitude. Let’s get to work,” Red declared, then pointed to Rapunzel. “You’re up. Tell something with heart. And stuffing. Preferably chaotic.”

Rapunzel gave a devilish grin. “I have just the thing…

Threadbare Heart: The Tale of Annabelle Stitch

(As remembered by a dusty attic doll who has definitely seen things.)

Once, in a house with too many forgotten corners, there lived a doll named Annabelle Stitch. She had candy-cane striped legs, button eyes that had seen a thousand sunrises through the cracks of a toy chest, and a heart - literally sewn inside her - with a note that read:

“Kindness above all.”

But this wasn’t some sunshine-and-giggles type of story, darlings. Oh no. Because when toys are left behind too long, they remember. They grow clever. They get ideas.

Annabelle was the queen of the nursery before it was abandoned. She ruled with soft hands and big stitched smiles, always keeping the peace between the mischievous wind-up cat and the moody porcelain ballerina. But when the humans grew up and locked the door, everything changed.

Toys started disappearing.

One by one, Annabelle’s friends vanished in the night. A rustle here, a squeak there, and poof - gone. The only clue left behind? Loose threads. Scorched cotton. A faint smell of peppermint and sulfur.

Annabelle, naturally, took charge.

She stitched together a crew: a broken jack-in-the-box who spoke in riddles, a sleepy plush dragon with half a wing, and a pair of sock monkeys that only moved when no one was looking.

The culprit?

The Moth King, an ancient attic dweller who feasted on forgotten joy and threadbare dreams. He whispered lies into the seams of the dolls, turning them against each other, unraveling them from the inside out.

But Annabelle? Her heart note glowed.

And in a final showdown of sewing-needle swordplay and glitter-laced strategy, she lured the Moth King into a trap made of silver yarn and bedtime stories, sealing him inside an old music box with nothing but the tune of a lullaby to torment him for eternity.

She saved the nursery.

But not without cost - her own stitches were faded, her candy-striped legs worn thin, and her heart… threadbare.

Still, every night when the moon rises just right, Annabelle Stitch leads bedtime patrol in the attic, keeping watch with kindness, sass, and a sharpened embroidery needle.

When the story ended, there was a beat of silence before Snow slowly raised a brow.

“That… wasn’t about Raggedy Ann by any chance, was it?”

Goldi gasped. “Wait - is that in the public domain?!”

Red snorted. “According to the dates on the Gutenberg archive? Oh honey, she’s fair game.”

Cinderella clinked her teacup. “Well played, Rapunzel.”

Tink muttered, “Still not over the doll with more authority than me.”

And with that, the crew packed up their magical mayhem for the day.

Workday: complete.
Dolls: definitely haunted.
Thread count: legendary.
