(One day a year, the dead return... but not all of them come back the same.)Scene: It's the break room at The Immortal Quill.
Goldi’s painting her nails like mini skulls. Snow’s nervously eyeing a bowl of pan de muerto. Tink has glittered everything she could find in neon orange, and Red has her boots on the table, sipping cinnamon tea with an arched brow.
And in walks Mira, the quiet temp from the archives - draped in embroidered shawls, her eyes lined in gold. “Mind if I tell today’s story?”
Cue everyone dropping their croissants.
"Whispers of the Marigold"
They say in the town of San Oscura, the line between life and death is… loose.
Every Día de los Muertos, the streets bloom with marigolds and candlelight. Families leave sugar skulls and tamales for their ancestors. The veil thins.
But San Oscura? It has rules for the festival:
- Don’t leave marigolds in a circle.
- Never offer food to someone you don’t recognize.
- And above all - never speak the name of the forgotten.
Camila, a spirited teen who worked at her grandma’s bakery, thought the rules were silly. Ghost stories meant to keep kids in line.
Until she found the old photo - faded, crinkled, left behind in a sugar tin. A little boy with sad eyes and a missing name.
Camila, soft-hearted rebel that she was, whispered his name into the wind.
That night, she saw him.
Not a ghost. Not quite human either.
He didn’t speak, just followed - everywhere. His eyes grew darker. His shadow stretched longer. And every offering Camila left for her ancestors vanished before morning, replaced by dead petals and cracked sugar skulls.
Grandma knew.
“You called one who had no altar. No prayers. No peace.”
Turns out, The Forgotten wait in the dark -jealous, empty, desperate. They drift through marigold fields, hunting voices to answer their names. And when one hears their name?
They cling.
Forever.
Camila had one chance - to build him a place. A real altar. Not out of guilt, but love. To give him a name again. To remember.
She did.
And just as the boy reached for her soul… he smiled instead.
And faded.
Some say he visits the bakery now, only on Día de los Muertos. And a fresh sugar skull always goes missing.
“Holy moly,” whispered Rapunzel.
“Please tell me she made it into pastry school,” said Cinderella, wiping away a tear.
Tink stared at her skull mug. “Okay yeah, that slapped.”
Goldi nodded. “Respect the veils, people.”
And as the group packed up and the candles burned low, Mira slipped back into the archives - her marigold earrings glowing faintly in the dark.
