“The Maypole Mystery”
A tale of ribbons, revelry, and a story wrapped in springtime enchantment.
It was an ordinary immortal morning at the office of Ink & Lore. Cinderella was alphabetizing enchanted scrolls, Rapunzel was using her hair to dust the top shelves (again), and Tink was floating around the break room complaining about the espresso-to-sass ratio.
And then…
Red stormed in like a wolf in lipstick.
“Who put a freakin’ pole in the courtyard wrapped in rainbow ribbons like a unicorn threw up joy??”
A hush. A pause. Then from the other side of the archive -
“IT’S MAYDAY, BABY!”
Dorothy slid into the room wearing a flower crown and jingle bells on her boots.
“Time to dance, feast, and tell a tale under the sun! Come on, don't act like y’all don’t need vitamin D and dopamine!”
Alice peeked over her tea.
“We work in a timeless, magical office. The sun is literally optional.”
Loki winked from a shadow. “But mischief in daylight? That’s rare fun.”
So they all tumbled outside.
Snow White brought apple cider. Rapunzel braided flower chains.
Tink enchanted the maypole so the ribbons twirled in the air all flirty-like, and yes -Cinderella actually kicked off her heels.
Once the ribbon dancing began, someone (probably Ivy, invisible and devious) put on a flute-and-drum remix of fae festival music that slapped hard.
And right as Red was mid-ribbon whip, Wendy cleared her throat.
“Wait, wait. Before we all pass out from fae bread and cider - someone’s got to tell the actual story of the Maypole. Who’s got the tea?”
Enter: Janelle, Keeper of Story Snacks.
Wearing a tunic made of wildflowers and a belt of mini scrolls, she stood beneath the pole and spun her tale:
“The Ribbon of Realms” – A Mayday Fable
Once, there was a realm where spring never came unless the people danced. The earth itself was shy- blushing and blooming only when coaxed by celebration.
So each year, the villagers gathered ‘round a sacred pole of enchanted wood, said to be carved from the spine of an ancient world-tree. They tied ribbons for wishes - one for love, one for hope, one for mischief, and one for memory.
As they danced, the ribbons wove stories into the wind, sending laughter to the clouds and secrets into the soil.
One year, the pole vanished after the dance. Stolen, they believed, by the realm’s trickster god who wanted spring for himself.
But the next morning, where the pole had stood, bloomed the most radiant field of wildflowers the world had ever seen.
The ribbons had rooted.
The wishes had taken hold.
And that’s how the land remembered joy.
Silence followed.
Then Red threw her hands in the air. “Okay, fine! That was actually beautiful. I’ll stop being grumpy. For like five minutes.”
Loki handed her cider.
Alice handed her a flower crown.
And yes - Rumplestiltskin was watching from a window with a smug grin and a Maypole-themed cake, because of course he was.
As the sun set, the team lounged on blankets, bellies full, souls warm, and magic tangled in every ribbon.
Another tale spun. Another memory woven into the great quillbound chronicles.
