📚 Short Stories From The Immortal Quill – Issue #56
The Algorithm of Doom

It was a fog-laced morning at The Immortal Quill, the kind of gray that made the parchment curl and the quills droop. The crew was assembled, supposedly brainstorming ideas for the next batch of tales. Supposedly.
Goldi, however, wasn’t really present.
Slouched at her desk, one foot kicked up on a stack of unpaid coffee tab invoices, she was completely absorbed in her phone - eyes locked, expression a blend of horror and “wait - what?”
Tink noticed first. “Goldi. Hello? Are you even listening?”
No answer.
Red leaned in. “Is she watching possums set fire to kitchens again or something worse?”
Cindi peeked over Goldi’s shoulder. “Oh sweet stilettoed stars, she's doom scrolling again.”
“Goldi!” Tink clapped her hands. “Snap out of it. We’re trying to figure out who’s going to tell today’s story and you’re over there spiraling through internet Armageddon!”
Goldi blinked, dazed. “Did you know octopuses are starting to walk on land now? WALK, people. With their little squiggly legs. No one’s talking about it!”
Cindi snatched the phone like a mom catching her kid in the cookie jar. “Okay, that's it. You're deep in the algorithm. Step away from the spirals.”
Red crossed her arms. “Girl, when was the last time you cleared your search history? You're being fed fear-fueled sludge on the daily.”
“Yeah,” Cindi nodded. “You searched ‘how long would it take for squirrels to take over civilization’ once and now your entire feed is rodent rebellions and climate collapse memes.”
“It’s a doom spiral,” Red added. “Algorithmic chaos. You feed it one panic thought, it gives you ten more. It’s like emotional Jenga with anxiety blocks.”
Goldi sighed. “But it’s so… weirdly comforting to know everything is falling apart. Makes me feel like I don’t have to try so hard.”
“Oh no,” said Red, grabbing her latte. “That’s Stockholm Syndrome with your phone. You need a digital exorcism.”
Tink, dramatically brandishing a glitter pen like a wand, declared, “By the powers of caffeine, sass, and storytelling - I command thee to clear thy browser history, clear thy video history, create brand new social feed by searing calming content like a mad woman and reclaim thy joy!”
Cindi put a hand on Goldi’s shoulder. “Look, the first step is admitting you’ve been mentally hijacked by an algorithmic monster. The next step is fresh cat videos and zero doom for a week.”
“And memes about haunted library cats,” Red added. “We’re easing her back into happy weird.”
Goldi slowly reached for her phone. “…Maybe I have been in a doomsday content cult. I was feeling like there was no funny or happy stuff out there anymore”
Everyone nodded sagely.
“That’s right,” said Cindi. “Now hit refresh on your life, babe.”
Goldi hit clear history with a flourish, deleted her video history, liked a bunch of beautiful floral images, and tossed the phone into her tote. “Okay, new rule. No more doom till at least after lunch.”
“Atta girl,” Tink smirked. “Now. Who’s telling today’s story? And no apocalypse content, thank you.”
“Fine,” Goldi grinned. “I’ll write a cheerful tale about an octopus librarian who stops the end of the world using sarcasm and tea.”
“See,” said Red, sipping her coffee. “She’s healing already.”
